      Flow Chart Symbols
Basic Process Step: A rectangle identifies an activity which is occurring at this point in the flow chart. It’s most useful to add a brief description of the activity.
Terminal: This symbol signifies where you have chosen the flow diagram to start and stop. Always write the work start and stop to make it crystal clear.
Decision: This diamond symbol represents a decision point in the process. A question should be written inside the diamond so the choices of which next step to move to are easy to understand. At any decision point the path will show 2 or more choices to branch to. Answers to the question (usually ‘yes’ or ‘no’) are written on the flow chart.
Flow line: The simple flow line with its arrow head indicates the direction or path that connects the elements of the flow chart
Connector: This symbol is used when you have run out of space and have not reached the end of the process. Simply assign it a number or a letter – then move to a new page and redraw the connector with the same letter or number inside. It will allow others to follow your work.
Inspection: This large round circle indicates an inspection or check point. It represents a definite measuring action.
Transportation: This symbol indicates when a part or product is physically moved to a new location.
Document: This symbol represents the need for, or existence of, a written document that is important to the process. The name of the document should be written into the symbol.
Storage: This symbol is used to show an item going into storage for an indefinite period of time.
