     1. Directing(“Telling”)
The Leader tells her team what she wants done and how she wants it done, without getting feedback or input from them.
  Effective when:
• There are time limits or an urgent need
• The employee is new or the team is junior
Ineffective when:
• There is a need for teambuilding or trust
• You want to enhance engagement and skills
       2. Guiding (“Selling”)
The Leader may ask the employee for input but makes all the decisions.
  Effective when:
• Team members lack skills, experience, or expertise
• An employee has experience but is new to the position
Ineffective when:
• You want to develop decision making and engagement in your team
• High degree of conflict is present in team
       3. Motivating(“Supporting”)
The Leader uses open, two-way dialogue and feedback to inspire performance that will bring out the best in the team.
  Effective when:
• There’s a need for ideas and input from all levels for continuous improvement
• Team members are capable or have high potential
Ineffective when:
• Team members lack skills or knowledge
       4. Empowering (“Delegating”)
The Leader sets the priorities and objectives and allows the team to analyze the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do it. The Leader delegates the appropriate level of empowerment and is accountable for the team’s decision.
  Effective when:
• Team is capable and motivated to successfully achieve defined goals
• Team norms are well established and functioning
Ineffective when:
• Team members lack the skills, information, knowledge, resources or motivation
• Employee expects to be told what to do
