2 PRESBYOPIA AND BABY BOOMERS
Defining Baby Boomers
Baby boomers are a cultural term formed to define a post-World
War II generation. The US Census characterizes this group as being
born between 1946-1966. They are now 46 years or older. This
generation enjoyed the fruits of an economic boom not seen
previously. Baby Boomers lead the revolution for technological
advances. Industries were created to fill their unique needs whether it
was diapers, computers or the increase in the number of colleges.
Studies have predicted, that these Baby Boomers will far outlive
previous generations. Some say, they will live even longer than
Generation X, those born between the years 1966-1976. This is due
to a number of contributing factors, including the notion that, Baby
Boomers pay extreme attention to health.
Advances in the field of vision, contact lenses, and then LASIK,
were driven by the needs of this generation. Today, people above 46
years of age live in a more complicated society, where needs for
precise vision are more demanding than ever before. They worked
hard all their lives and saved enough to write the great American
novel or explore the world. For both of these activities and many
others, they desire to be free from visual aids. They have learned to
use computers, iPads, iPhones, and want to be able to use them
without the hassle of glasses. Some compete with Generations Y
(those born 1977-1994), on roads and in the workplace. They desire
versatile vision.
