Figure 11.2 Dry Eye Disease: Predisposing Factors
Treatment of dry eyes:
The logical way to treat dry eyes would be to first identify the
cause and instigate appropriate treatment. The shotgun approach of
throwing bottled drops advertised on television usually does not
work and sometimes can be harmful. These drops contain
preservatives which can further contribute to dryness. Some like
visine which pride in taking the red out, have vasoconstrictors which
can lead to rebound vasodilatation and further redness.
Let us review our example of the water in the wash basin. We can
increase water flow by further opening the tap flow control. Oral
vitamins and nutritional products have shown to increase production
of natural tears. Even an antibiotic doxycycline is known to increase
production and flow by making secretions more liquid. Those who
prefer natural options can drink flax seed oil to increase tear
production of better quality.
