        downsizing, cost-cutting, or your Manager is struggling with a “full
        plate,” you might want to wait until circumstances improve.





                   If A then B – Mom’s Quid Pro Quo


                   As a child, I remember refusing to eat certain vegetables
                   (okay  I  admit  it…any  vegetable),  until  my  mother  said,

        “Joanne,  eat  your  broccoli,  and  you’ll  get  dessert.”  She  was
        inadvertently schooling me in the “art of negotiation” with her “if A

        then  B”  technique.  If  you  have  an  important  request,  such  as  a

        promotion, by all means, let your Manager know why you believe you
        deserve the job, but also point out how the company stands to benefit

        by employing “If A then B.” By example “If I can take on this additional
        responsibility for supervising the team, they will field their questions

        to me, leaving you more time to focus on those sales goals.” Or B,

        “This promotion benefits both of us; by allowing me to have more
        responsibility in the office, I’ll gain more experience while you work

        on growing the company.”
