As school gears up, it’s important to discuss pedestrian safety rules of the road with your student walker. Parents and motorists must realize that children are not small adults. Un l children are at least 10 or 11 years old, they have limited developmental skills to handle complex tra c situa ons. Take some me to review these simple rules of the road with your student.
• Obey all tra c laws
• Use sidewalks or walk against the direc on of
tra c, and always use the crosswalk.
• A marked crosswalk at signalized intersec ons is the safest place to cross.
• Look le , right, then le again before crossing. • At intersec ons, don’t forget to check over your
shoulder for turning vehicles.
• Be visible. Wear bright colors, re ec ve accessories such as belts, jewelry, and clothes.
• Don’t dart out into the street.
