Summer Construc on
Tops $50M
by Susan Hann, PE, AICP, director of planning and project management (with apologies to Samuel Clemens)
was the night before school starts and all through Brevard, construc on was humming throughout the schoolyard.
The pipes were all hung from the ceiling with care,
in hopes that AC units soon would be there.
The crews haven’t seen very much of their beds, because chillers aren’t working and power is dead.
With the team in their hard hats and holding some plans, they are working all night with their tools and their hands.
When out on the lawn there arose such a cla er! It’s delivery of stu that truly does ma er!
When what to my wondering eyes should appear... but the pumps and the fences and all sorts of gear.
More rapid than eagles, equipment it came.
We whistled and shouted and called schools by name. We worked hard at Apollo and Fairglen and Stone.
At Jackson, DeLaura and Hoover we’ve shown
we can build it so fast – it looks like a cyclone.
Hit Bayside and Westside and Kennedy too,
at Pinewood and Sabal and Saturn we ew
to old, failing systems we all bid adieu.
At Southwest and Turner we tried something new.
A new energy plant for not one, but two.
West Melbourne and Sherwood are both in the mix And Melbourne High School had so much to x!
With new roofs -- at Andersen, Fairglen, Stone, Jackson and Saturn should stay dry as a bone. New security work is well underway,
with safety in mind at school every day.
We also did work with our capital funds:
AC in the gym at Kennedy, DeLaura and Jackson. So gym class at will be much more cool and relaxin’. Merri Island can swim in its resurfaced pool,
and new paving on tracks at a couple of schools. We had a big grant for new drainage and elds
at Merri Island High less pollu on will yield.
So thank you to those who endured the mess.
We hope that your school year will be a success. When the AC is working and facili es aren’t a concern, the teachers can teach and the students can learn.
So by August 10, the crews were all gone.
We’re ready for students at the break of dawn!
