The Spanish Royal Family repeatedly distinguished the Palace Hotel with their consideration and, at times, honoured it with their presence. Se llegó así al 12 de octubre de 1912, fecha o cial de la inauguración. El Heraldo de Madrid se hizo eco al día siguiente del acto:
«El carácter esencialmente mundial que Madrid tiene con el nuevo Palace Hotel tuvo ayer su con- sagración al inaugurar o cialmente este edi cio. La inauguración fue un acontecimiento para todas las clases sociales y las cuatro mil y pico de invitaciones repartidas llevaron al nuevo hotel representaciones de la política, la literatura y las bellas artes, en amigable consorcio con la aristo- cracia, que podrán elogiar como merece el acierto de la sociedad que ha construido el Palace Hotel».
La Orquesta Sinfónica inauguró la esta con
un concierto que fue seguido de una recepción restringida a las autoridades y al ministro de Bél- gica, por ser la sociedad propietaria de esta na- cionalidad. Terminada ésta, se invitó al público
a pasar al salón de estas, donde se interpretó un concierto de música clásica, hubo «bailes de ca- rácter» y la soprano Elvira Hidalgo cantó el aria de El barbero de Sevilla y la canción Clavelitos. Fue entonces cuando se abrió el bufé «que ocupa- ba en toda su extensión el magní co restaurante del establecimiento».
Las tertulias del día siguiente hablarían, además, del nuevo triunfo de Vicente Pastor, de la recien- te huelga de ferroviarios y de la primera mujer que ejercía la abogacía en Italia, de aquel bufé compuesto por «thé, café, chocolat, consommé, broche de foie-gras, sándwiches assortis, patis-

‘The o cial date of the inauguration, October 12th, thus arrived. El Heraldo de Madrid reported on the event the next day:
The essentially worldly character that Madrid has acquired with the new Palace Hotel had its consecration yesterday with the o cial inaugu- ration of this building. The inauguration was an event for all social classes and the four thousand or so guests at the new hotel included represent- atives from politics, literature and the ne arts, in an amiable consortium with the aristocracy, who will be able to justly praise the success of the company that built the Palace Hotel.’
The symphonic orchestra inaugurated the cel- ebration with a concert that was followed by an exclusive reception for authorities and the minis- ter of Belgium, given that the proprietor compa- ny was of that nationality. Once this ended, the public was invited to the dance hall where a con- cert of classical music and dancing were staged and the soprano Elvira Hidalgo sang the aria from ‘The Barber of Seville’ and the song ‘Claveli- tos’. The bu et was then opened, ‘which occu- pied the entire expanse of the establishment’s magni cent restaurant’.
