LOS AÑOS DEL DESPEGUE ECONÓMICO
Tras la decisión adoptada en noviembre de 1950 por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en la que se acordó anular la retirada de embaja- dores y admitir a España en los organismos in- ternacionales, comenzó el despegue económico español y la apertura a otros países. El hotel lo notó en la llegada de personajes como Jorge Ne- grete y Ernest Hemingway, quien llegó en 1954, tras 18 años sin pisar Madrid. El escritor nortea- mericano recogería en sus escritos el ambiente del bar, donde se reunían poetas, políticos, - nancieros y artistas. Pero, sobre todo, lo notó en la llegada de actores americanos como Tyrone Power, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson, George Sanders, Cary Grant y Gary Cooper, que se cruzaban en los salones con otros personajes célebres de la época como los cantantes María Callas y Giuseppe di Stefano, el campeón automo- vilístico Juan Manuel Fangio, el escritor Miguel Mihura, el actor José Isbert, el barman Perico Chi- cote, el ciclista Guillermo Timoner, la cantante Victoria de los Ángeles y la actriz Sara Montiel.
La llegada de tantos personajes populares estaba motivada por que en el Ritz se mantenía el crite- rio de no admitir a aquel artista que estuviera de moda y su presencia rompiera el ambiente tran- quilo del hotel, si bien esta norma no se aplicaba en el caso de que el artista manifestara su deseo de pasar desapercibido. THE YEARS OF ECONOMIC BOOM
The Spanish economic boom and aperture to- ward other countries began after the General Assembly of the United Nations agreed in 1950 to nullify the withdrawal of ambassadors from Spain and to allow the country to participate in international organizations. The change was visible at the hotel with the arrival of such gures as Jorge Negrete and Ernest Hemingway, who arrived in 1954 having not set foot in Madrid for 18 years. The American writer would describe
in his writings the atmosphere of the bar, where poets, politicians, nanciers and artists met up. Above all, however, the change was notable by the arrival of American actors such as Tyrone Power, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson, George Sanders, Cary Grant and Gary Cooper, who passed in the hotel’s halls other celebrated gures of the period, such as the singers Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano, the car rac-
ing champion Juan Manuel Fangio, the writer Miguel Mihura, the actor Jose Isbert, the bar- tender Perico Chicote, the cyclist Guillermo Timoner, the singer Victoria de los Ángeles and the actress Sara Montiel.
The arrival of so many famous popular gures was motivated by the fact that the Ritz main- tained its criteria of not admitting artists who were in vogue and whose presence would disturb the tranquil atmosphere of the hotel, although this rule was waived if the artist made clear his desire to go unnoticed.
