mecanizado. Estas iniciativas se compaginaban con nuevos hoteles en la Costa Azul y en el Bálti- co, pero el estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial supuso un grave revés para el expansionismo eco- nómico de Georges Marquet, y todas estas inicia- tivas no superaron el grado de proyecto.
El edi cio batió marcas de rapidez en su ejecu- ción, pero las fechas de inicio y nalización no están jadas con exactitud. En sus notas, Ferrés dice que se inician las obras el 22 de diciembre de 1910, y sabemos que el 22 de abril de 1911 se termi- naron los trabajos de excavación y de preparación de la cimentación. Un mes más tarde, concluidos los encofrados, se empieza a hormigonar. No pa- rece posible que se pusiera la primera piedra el 9 de julio de 1911 —como se ha escrito— salvo que se tratase de un acto protocolario de nalización de la estructura. De aquellos días son las últi-
mas fotografías de las obras hechas por Eduard Ferrés i Puig con su cámara Verascope. No hay duda de que el hotel se inauguró o cialmente el 12 de octubre de 1912, aunque el primer cliente
se inscribió en el hotel el día 21 de septiembre, lo que demuestra que en esa fecha estaba conclui- do. La construcción habría durado en torno a los 21 meses, de los que 17 estuvieron dedicados a levantar la estructura y terminar el edi cio. Esta celeridad en la ejecución demuestra una gestión sumamente e caz, tanto por parte de los arquitec- tos responsables de la obra —entre los que gura Manuel Álvarez Naya en el cargo de director— como por parte de la constructora encargada de realizarla, en este caso la empresa Construcciones y Pavimentos, de Joan Miró i Trepat, con la parti-

The building was built in record time, but the dates of its beginning and completion are nor recorded with precision. In his notes, Ferrés states that work began on December 22nd, 1910 and we know that on April 22nd, 1911, work on ex- cavation and the preparation for the laying of the foundations was completed. One month later, with the plank moulds completed, the cementing process began. It doesn’t seem possible that the rst stone was placed on July 9th, 1911 (as was written), unless it was merely a ceremonial act marking the end of completion of the structure. The last photographs of the construction work Eduard Ferrés i Puig took with his Verascope camera date from that period. There is no doubt that the hotel was o cially inaugurated on Octo- ber 12th, 1912, although the rst client registered at the hotel on September 21st, which indicates that work was already completed by that date. The construction work lasted around 21 months, of which 17 were dedicated to raising the struc- ture and nishing the building. The speed of
the construction reveals a highly e cient man- agement, as much on the part of the architects responsible for the work (among whom gured Manuel Álvarez Naya in the position of director) as on the part of the builder in charge of realising the work, in this case the company Construc- ciones y Pavimentos run by Joan Miró i Trepat, with the participation of Leon Monnoyer et Fils, who were in charge of calculating the structure
