As a physician...
I promise to never forget that people come from various walks of life and I won’t be able to fully understand them because I was never in their place.
I promise to recognize my own strengths and weaknesses, and to be humble enough to acknowledge my limitations.
I promise not to hesitate to ask for help from my colleagues or other health professionals such as physician assistants and nurses.
I promise to share my knowledge and skills with my colleagues to help them; I will not think of them as my competitors but people who exert positive influence on me.
I promise to be reliable and compassionate, putting my patients’ interests above my own.
I promise to disassemble the power imbalance that is often created between those who have medical knowledge and those who passively receive it.
I promise not to let prejudice get in my way of treating all people with kindness.
I promise to strive to work for equitable health care where various factors do not interfere in the common goal of eliminating diseases and curing illness.
I promise to be the physician educator who can truly understand patients, even those whose first language is not English, and to convey my knowledge and instruction in terms that are easily understandable.
I promise to be the physician advocate for the voices unheard and work towards creating a healthcare system where everyone can comfortably negotiate with his or her medical encounter.
