world (Vassau, 2018). Organic sales as a whole have been steadily rising in the United States (Figure 8.),
which would easily cause consumers to be captivated by Peruvian products. On “Espresso & Coffee Guide”
Peru is advertised as one of the places where both Fair Trade and Organic certified single-origin coffee is
widely available (“Peru Coffee Beans,” 2019). The country’s highlight from businesses and certifiers alike fit
perfectly into a very environmentally-focused market in the United States.
2. FAIR TRADE, EQUALITY, AND ETHICS
As previously stated, Peruvian
coffee farms also happen to be known
for their Fair Trade certifications.
Trade issues in of itself frequently goes
hand-in-hand with the concern and
interest of US consumers. According to
the Canadian Market Analysis Report
in 2012, 56% of US consumers
reported that Fair Trade had a
“Medium” to “Very High” impact on
their beverage and food buying
decisions. Coffee as a Fair Trade

product grew 19% in 2010
(Agriculture, 2012). Latin America currently accounts for 80% of all Fair Trade Coffee Products. Shown in
the diagram below (Figure 9), Peru specifically is singled out for being in the top five organic Fair Trade
coffee production capacity (“Coffee,” 2019). A critical study of the effects of Fair Trade on Peruvian coffee
farmers, while critiquing some of the actual benefits of on the level of house-hold and family income,
