POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS (PBIS) AT VIRGEN
DEL CARMEN SCHOOL, OCCOPATA
INTRODUCTION
We have been working in an elementary school called Virgen del Carmen, located 30 minutes
outside of Cusco city in an indigenous community called Occopata. In order to travel to the school, it’s a bit
more than just taking a taxi or a bus - it requires taking a taxi to Huancaro and then a “collectivo,” which is
essentially a group taxi, up to Occopata. However, our transportation is provided to Occopata by car twice a
week. Below you’ll find a picture of Occopata and its relation to Cusco city on the map. It’s also important to
note that the weather is a bit more extreme there. The mornings are colder than in Cusco and the sun is
stronger and hotter midday than in Cusco as well, so layers are essential. The dress code is also very casual on
account of there being mud some days. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting a
bit messy.
