used worldwide to heal ailments. These molecules include vinca alkaloid, vinblastine, vincristine,
camptothecin, and taxanes. Overall, these natural remedies may be a better choice for some cancer patients
who are not physically strong enough to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Unlike these modern
medicine approaches, medical plants do not cause further damaging to genes and often have higher anti-
inflammatory and antioxidant activities. In general, medical plants can perform some of the same processes as
modern medicine provides such as inhabitation of cell proliferation, defense against intracellular connections
and allows for further apoptosis of cancer cells. 1
Scientists are doing more and more research on medicinal plants to find their true potential.
Particularly concerning Lymphoma, scientists have been researching a particular type of Hodgkin Lymphoma
called Dalton’s Lymphoma. This specific type of cancer is categorized by its ascetic tumors, which are a
buildup of fluids in the abdomen, and its spontaneous, aggressive, and invasive behavior. One medicinal plant
that is currently being used to aid in cancer treatments for Dalton’s Lymphoma is Oroxylum indicum, which
has the common name of Indian Trumpet Tree.
These trees are mainly found in India’s deciduous
forests. The part of the tree used for Dalton’s
Lymphoma is the root, which is made into a paste
for consumption. Not only does this root have anti-
inflammatory properties but it also can cause
apoptosis in cancer cells. Using the active
compound of flavonoids baicalein, the Indian
Trumpet Tree signals the HL-60 cell line to go
through the process of apoptosis. The root paste
