Representation of woman in polygamy genre TV

drama series

Indonesian culture that marginalizes the role of women has affects the forming

of the nation's character. Culture has an important role in the construction of a

person's gender and affects the prespective of the role of women in society. This

also applies to the practice of polygamy in Indonesian culture. The practice of

polygamy itself has long been carried out in Indonesia. This practice is carried out

by men who can marry more than one woman. This polygamy has pros and cons

in practice which is due to the issue of gender inequality in the practice.

therefore research on the topic of polygamy is always an interesting thing to

discuss. This day media has a big role in our life. media as a facility for delivering

messages and also as a cultural-forming agent among the community. The

current development of films and drama series as mass media has a role as an

effective form for conveying a message. A drama series “Mega Series Suara Hati

Istri: Zahra” is one of the best known drama series that raises a discussion with

gender issues in the form of social relations between women and men. The

polygamy practice is shown that the husband has three wifes with different

range of age has caught Indonesia society attantion and become a topic of

discussion on social media.

This drama series also tells the culture of polygamy and women's role are still

dominated by men in social life. Based on this description, this research is built

on the issue of gender and the role of women depicted in the media. Therefore

the research has a focus on the realm of gender, communication and media. This

study aims to seee how the media portrays the role of women related to gender

issues and polygamy culture in the drama seriues “Mega Series Suara Hati Istri:

Zahra”. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with

discourse analysis method by Sara Mills. This method was chosen in this study to

find out and describe how women were shown in media TV drama series. The

subject of this research is the drama series “Mega Series Suara Hati Istri: Zahra”

and the object of this research is several scenes and dialogues that are entered

into text form. It is intended that the data can be analyzed using the critical

discourse analysis method of the Sara Mills model in order to better see how the

positions of actors are displayed in the text. There are ten (10) scene pieces which

choosen from among four episodes that were researched and described in text

form as the research unit in this study which describes the position of women

and men in the practice of polygamy. Then the data obtained is tested with Miles

and Hubermen consist of the stages of data reduction, data presentation and

analysis, after the data is collected for the last stage is the conclusion. And it was

found that women's roles were represented are about gender issues are

described by the dominance of men in polygamy in the tv drama series.
