Southeast Asia is one of the most vulnerable regions in the
world to the effects of climate change and Singapore, within
that, is far from immune. Singapore has tackled the challenges
brought about by climate change with a bias to action:
enhancing our climate pledge under the Paris Agreement and
setting ambitious targets with the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
But we can’t stop here.
Climate change is an all-of-society problem which requires collective solutions, changes
in behaviours and mind-sets.
At HSBC, our purpose has always been to help our customers, our people, and our
communities be equipped to meet changes and risks and turn them into opportunities.
With SMEs powering a large part of businesses in Singapore and in the region, we view
them as invaluable agents of transformation when it comes to moving the needle on climate
change. Yet, we recognise that they sometimes lack the tools and resources to embark on
their sustainability journey.
Similarly, we understand that we need to foster and nurture our future generations with the
right skill sets to meet and address the challenges that climate change will bring.
To that end, we saw how important it was for us to support NYAA’s “Shaping A Sustainable
Future” pilot project.
I am heartened to see how the project has engaged and empowered our youths to shape a
sustainable future, particularly for SMEs who are the backbone of our economy. The seeds
of passion and knowledge that these young people plant today will eventually grow into
our sustainability talent for tomorrow.
