04 BOWLINE
Probably the most useful knot on a boat, the Bowline provides a standing loop in
the end of a line. Easy to tie, the knot is also easy to undo even after being under
severe load.
There are many ways to tie a Bowline and the working end can lie inside or
outside the final loop. The easiest way in light line is to place the working end of
the line over the standing part, and twist as shown so that it appears through a
loop. Then pass the end round the standing part and back down through the
initial loop. This process is a knack, but easily learned.
The Bowline must be worked up tight, particularly in springy synthetic ropes.
