Triple Crown
Challenge 2018
By Private Nauraj Gurung
The annual Triple Crown Challenge was held on Wednesday 9th May 2018.
Soldier First
This is an annual event which promotes esprit de corps
and the Soldier First ethos whilst strengthening the
ties between the various branches of the Corps. The
Competition was divided into two parts, a March and
Shoot Competition and a Military Skills Competition.
March and Shoot
The March and Shoot consists of a twelve mile march
carrying a 15 kg pack and weapon, with a shooting
competition at the half way point. The marching time
and shooting score are then combined to determine
the overall winner. A total of 136 teams took part in the
March and Shoot competition which included nine teams
from across the Brigade of Gurkhas. In addition to the
overall March and Shoot Cup, Gurkha Staff and Personnel
Support members can also compete for the Colonel
Commandant’s Brigade of Gurkhas Cup.
Military Skills
This year’s Military Skills included a loaded
march of 6 miles, incorporating a Military Skills
stand where individuals were tested on their
Military Annual Training Tests which included
Battlefield Casualty Drills, Navigation, Skill at
Arms and a general military knowledge test.
The entire stand was conducted wearing a
respirator. Concluding the Military Skills phase,
individual teams had to complete a ‘Tough
Mudder’ style course, consisting of climbing over
an ‘A’ frame, wading through a water obstacle
which was refreshingly cool, traversing the
monkey bars over a water channel, tractor tyre
rolling and carry weights. Climbing over the
silage bales proved quite a challenge for some.
