HOOVER
Hoover is the name I gave to a chipmunk that would visit me to collect sun ower seeds. His name came from the way his cheeks pu ed out like the dust bags on the famous vacuum cleaner by that name. It got to the point where I would open a sliding patio door a tiny bit and place a child’s sand bucket lled with the seeds close in- side. Hoover would sneak past the opening and jump into the buck- et surrounded by seeds, ll his cheeks with them, and then scoot out the parted door back to his den. One day I did not slide the door open as far as usual and the opening was narrower. After Hoover lled his cheeks, they were wider than the opening. It was comical to see him trying to exit, but blocked by his too wide head. Eventu- ally, he wised up, turned his head sideways and pushed through the opening. I opened the sliding door a little further.
