what subjects do I take?
Here is the IB “Circle” divided into six subject areas. To earn the IB Diploma, you will normally study
one subject from each area.
Inside the Subject circle is the Core: Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity,
Activity, Service (CAS). The Core is simply an extension of the Donovan
Catholic philosophy of educating the whole student — mind,
body and spirit .
Students will take some subjects at higher level
(HL) and some at standard level (SL). HL and
SL courses differ in scope but are measured
according to the same grade descriptors,
with students expected to demonstrate
a greater body of knowledge,
understanding and skills at higher
level.
The DP is a curriculum that
emphasizes both breadth and depth
of knowledge. It encourages students
to be inquiring, caring, compassionate,
and able to evaluate a range of points of
view.
As in AP courses, IB students will sit for
exams at the conclusion of each course.
Depending on the final grade, students may earn
college credit for that course.
