spooked somehow because they had my gun collection, our crystal and china all
ready to go out the door but, instead, left all of it by the back door.

The Cook County police said we were lucky that we were not home and that they
expected that the burglars would be returning. They said that when you have a
major robbery, the likelihood of a repeat robbery is 70%. They suggested that we
stay at a local hotel for a few nights. I informed HR at Dow Corning of our

situation, and they immediately contacted the police and arranged for us to be able
to stay in our own house and to be assured that we were safe.

During the next ten days, we literally had Cook County police detectives living
with us. They arrived in plain clothes driving their own personal autos (one had a
Corvette) and would pull into the garage. They ate with us and slept with us

changing shifts with their partner. I went on to work daily.

The burglars were identified as professionals who were very dangerous. They
silenced and killed a guy in Chicago and another one in Las Vegas. Sue listened to
the cases these guys were involved in, and she can share those intriguing details
with you. It was suggested that it might be best if I did not prosecute but just settle
with my insurance company and go on with life. Fortunately, six months later we

moved to New Jersey, which was a relief.

My first assignment at Dow Corning was in Midland, Michigan. I was an order
entry clerk, which required me to enter customer purchase orders received from
salesmen, customers, and distributors for over 2,200 goods, excluding medical
products. I had to price products by size and arrange for shipping dates, points of
distribution and the carrier to be used. This really provided an excellent foundation

in learning the company, customers and products. I also gained insights into the
internal politics between divisions and management and their style of leadership.
This was the bird seat for me to decide where I wanted to work, in which
department I wanted to work, what product line I enjoyed, what managers I liked,

what geographical locations were open and which location I favored.

Being on the order desk for 30 months with no travel allowed me to go to Central
Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant at nights and on weekends to obtain my
MBA. I took a leave of absence one summer, so I could finish as soon as possible.
Dow Corning paid for all of it.
