Since I had the business and management knowledge, I decided I needed to
become acquainted with the technical applications of the products. I spent the next
year in the lab understanding silicone resins, adhesives, lubricants, greases, fluids
and rubber compounds. While learning about the molecule structures, I fell into

being a co-patent holder. We redesigned the process of manufacturing a silicone
fluid. If we acquired a patent while working for the company, the policy stated that
the company must pay $1 for full ownership of the patent. They may never use it,
but they will own it. I got my dollar per company policy. I was in the right place at
the right time, and the company gave us the credit.

I was soon offered a sales position that opened in Cleveland, Ohio, for a six-state
area with a new company car. I accepted and off we went. Sue ventured out to find

an apartment, doctors, church and school while I put on my traveling shoes. Some
of my major customers were: Johnson Controls, Sears, Xerox, Westinghouse,
Eastman Kodak, Goodrich, Goodyear, Firestone, Maytag, Corning Glass, Ace
Hardware, True Value, Kenmore and Hoover. The guy I replaced had “retired on
the job” but, unfortunately, forgot to leave, so, consequently, he was fired.
Therefore, much work was needed to be done since he had falsified trip and

expense reports, had not called on any customers in the recent months, and had not
taken care of the company car. In this job, I learned a lot in preparation for my
future management assignments on how he managed to make $500 to $1,000 a
week without ever leaving home. Hmm . . .

(Just an aside: When I took the Hong Kong position, I had a Chinese
salesman cheating the company out $2,000 to $3,000 a week every other

month. Having 17 countries to cover in Southeast Asia, he had traveled for
several years prior to my arrival. During those travels, he collected various
blank hotel and restaurant receipts, which could be filled in at will. The big
boogie was that he would have his secretary book flights with a local travel
agency, and then he would cancel the flights but get full credit on his

company or personal credit card. He did not need to return to the agency the
carbon copy for credit - only the original hard copy of the flight. Then he
submitted his expense report and other fake documents and would be
reimbursed for food, hotel and entertainment expenses.)
