Gutters & Downspouts
In order to preserve the existing roof design with its internal gutters and flat-mounted downspouts, external gutters
and downspouts are discouraged. However, there may be compelling reasons (such as those involving health and
safety considerations) for installing external gutters and downspouts.
DRB review is required for each application on a case-by-case basis. No approval for external gutters and
downspouts will be granted unless the applicant has provided compelling reasons that conditions exist which
support a modification to the original roof design. Waterview Cluster Board will review the application prior to
submission to the DRB and make a recommendation about the validity of the reason(s) provided by the applicant.
External gutters & downspouts must adhere to the following stipulations as part of the approval process:
Addition of an external gutter mounted on the wood fascia with a sloping section of approximately 45 degrees, that
returns the downspout to meet the face of the wall and extend to the ground, with the stipulation the gutter be
painted to match the color of the wood fascia, and that the downspouts are painted to match the mounted brick
wall.
Radon Equipment
Radon Equipment must be approved by following the Reston Association guidelines, with the stipulation that the
radon equipment is screened from view and mitigation equipment pipes that are installed externally be painted to
match the mounted brick wall, following the downspout stipulation above.
