THREE VILLAS AT GUIANA ISLAND, ANTIGUA
The house proper is perched at the south- east edge of the per- istyle court. It is organ- ised on three floors: the ground floor houses the living/sitting and enter- tainment areas; the lower ground houses the main dining hall and kitchens; and the top floor hous- es the master bedroom suite from which one can access the belvedere tower. The nymphaeum, situated on a lower ter- race, is used for outdoor dining and as a place of relaxation.
This villa makes references to Hellenistic Pergamum as well as to the Tivoli villas of the Roman period and of the Renaissance. One enters the villa through a peristyle propylon. This is a court of arrival that prepares the visitor for entry into the main court. The main court has colonnades on its east and west sides while its south side is defined by the variegated shapes and scales of three freestanding buildings/pavilions.
At the north-east corner a walled garden is located for the use of guests and visitors. At the centre is the peristyle propylon or entry court. To the west is the rotunda of the library which makes referenc- es to the long tradition of the ‘ Teatro Maritimo’ found in Roman and later Renaissance villas.
To the east side of the main court are located the buildings for the guests and visitors. To the west side of the main court one finds the staff accommodation, kitchens, the dining halls, and the pool outbuildings beyond.
The main house is situated on the north side of the court. The ground floor houses the living/sitting and entertainment areas. The second floor houses the master bedroom suite. At both ground and second floors are situated expansive porches from which one can enjoy the most spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and the sea beyond.
