As you can see, they include a few printing terms that someone new to graphic design may not be familiar with.
Several pages are printed on a single, large sheet of paper which from which the individual pages are then cut or
trimmed to their final page size. During the process of cutting the pages, it is impossible to cut them exactly, which is
why the ad‘s background needs to “bleed” or extend 1/8” beyond the edge of the cut size of the page, so that no white
is visible on the edge of the page. The way the pages are cut is also why all of the important information, either text or
images, need to be ¼” away from the edge.
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, the following images are visual examples of the layout specifications.
Example #1 Example #2
Example #1shows an ad designed to be 8 ½” x 11”which doesn’t include the extended 1/8” of image “bleed.” Depending
on how this page is cut, some white on the edges will be visible.
If I enlarge this ad to cover the “bleed” area, part of the puppies and text would be outside the 8 ½” x 11” page
and would be cut off as shown in Example #2.
