“One of my favorite memories while I was in the United States Army was attending Airborne
School with one of my friends from college ROTC. To this day, we still talk about the great
times we had, jumping out of planes together made us buddies for life. ”

“I crewed UH1H helicopters as part of the 82nd Airborne, and flew in the back seat. We were a
bunch of crazy individuals. I typically wore a 5-point harness strap, which is a seat belt-type
device that tied us to the helicopter. On many occasions, when we had new or ‘rookie’ pilot

flying the helicopter, we would wait until we were maybe 50 or 100 feet off the ground and
then step out of the rear door, walk up the landing skid and knock on the new pilot’s window
from the outside. This typically freaked them out! ”

small stories. However, there are few that really stand out. On the redeployment phase of
an operational readiness inspection, whatever could go wrong did go wrong. But through

sheer will, determination, and proper training we were able to meet the unit requirements
within 2 hours of the deadline. Afterwards, we flew to the Caribbean, where I was afforded
the unique opportunity to communicate via radio with my family who live there as we flew
                                      directly over them.”
