This is an ancient knot that got its name from its use on
sailing ships when sails were tied up or ‘reefed’. It is popular
with sailors because of the ease with which the knot can
be released, simply by pulling the top end of the reef knot
downwards, especially if they have only one hand free. It is the
most common knot used to tie shoelaces and most children
are taught by using the simple chant: overhand Knots and hItches
Left over right and tuck under
Right over left and tuck under
Be aware that this knot can slip if it is used to tie two ropes of
different thicknesses.

Tuck the rope under
the left rope and
complete the second
half of the knot.

Tighten so that it forms a
square-shaped, flat knot.
