Trucker’s hitch
A trucker’s hitch—in earlier times known as a wagoner’s hitch—is the general name for several
pulley-like cordage contrivances that secure the load on any kind of cart, carriage, or motor
vehicle by tightening its lashing around a convenient anchor point. Some are speedily applied
and untied again, but can spill if not carefully done; others, of which this is an example, take a
few more seconds to tie (and untie) but are more reliable.
Bring the end of the line or lashing close to its anchorage and tie a tucked figure-eight knot (1, 2).
Lead the working end around the anchorage (3) and through the figure-eight bight (4). Pull down
on the end to impart tension, then tie the working end off with two half hitches (see page 130) (5,
6, 7).
