Clove hitch
This knot offers a fast, easy way to secure a line to a post or spar. It is often used in climbing as a
temporary tie-in to an anchor point. The clove hitch will not bind after a load, and is therefore
easy to untie; only under a very high load will this hitch fail, although it can be insecure.
Start by passing the line around the post (1). Pass it around the post a second time, going in the
same direction, but making sure that the second wrap goes across the loaded line from the first
wrap (2). Feed the free end underneath the second wrap, keeping it next to the post (3). Make sure
there are at least a few inches of line left past the hitch away from the loaded end. Cinch the whole
knot tight to complete the knot (4).
