Rolling hitch

The rolling hitch is used to tie to a spar when the pull will be along the length rather than

perpendicular to it. This knot will hold as long as there is consistent pull on the standing end. It
is not as secure when under variable or shock loading.

Begin with a turn around the spar, with the working end finishing on the side closest to the load on
the knot (1). Bring the working end over the standing part, and make a second turn crossing over

the first (2). Make a third turn on the opposite side of the standing part, and feed the working end
under the turn (3). Pull on the working end to tighten (4).
