Halyard hitch

Halyards are the strong lines used to raise sails on ships. This hitch was used to fix a line to a rail

or post. It is a sturdy hitch that will withstand a varied load, but works best when tied on a
surface that has enough friction to hold the rope fast, like a wooden spar.

Begin with two full round turns around the spar, then bring the working end up to the top (1). Pass
the working end around behind the standing part, then feed it under all the wraps (2). Bring the

working end in front of the knot and pass it under the last wrap only (3). Snug all the wraps close
together, and cinch up the working end to tighten (4).
