Chapter 7 - Internet Etiquette (Netiquette)
What is Internet Etiquette?
Internet Etiquette is a rule of acceptable behaviour on the use of the Internet. It
also refers to the rules and regulations that are laid down to govern the use of the
Internet. Internet Etiquette is simply known as Netiquette.
NB: Etiquette is a rule of acceptable behaviour. It also refers to rules and
regulations that govern the behaviour that is socially acceptable.
Rules and regulations in Using Internet
Do not respond to flame as it will lead to "flame war". Flame is a rude,
insulting or threatening email message. Flame war occurs when flames
are replied with flames.
Avoid pornography on the Internet. Pornography refers to displaying
explicit sexual images, videos or literature. Therefore, do not search,
access, receive or forward pornographic websites and materials such as
videos, pictures, novels, etc. on the Internet.
Avoid sending spasm. A Spam is an unsolicited but identical email
messages sent to numerous recipients. Therefore, do not forward an
email message when it is not necessary and most importantly enter only
relevant email addresses when composing and sending email messages.
Respect the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of people. IPR refers
to the rights of original work in the literary domain. Therefore, do not
copy, distribute, sell or use copyrighted materials.
Avoid phishing. Phishing is the practice of creating fraudulent email
messages or website in order to trick Internet users into revealing
personal or financial information.
Do not shout. Type in lowercase (small) letters. Shouting means typing
in uppercase (capital) letters.
Respect other people's privacy. Internet Privacy deals with maintaining
privacy of other users on the Internet. Therefore, do not access and read
messages that are not meant for you, do not send or ask for sensitive
and personal information such as credit card, etc.
Reply to emails promptly.
