Chapter 8 - Creating Workbook

A blank workbook is displayed when Microsoft Excel is first opened (see

chapter 47 for how to launch a workbook). You can type information or design a
layout directly in this blank workbook.

               Types of Data in Cells

You can enter four types of data in a cell: labels/text, numbers, functions
               and formulas.
Value: Values are generally raw numbers or dates. Generally, a value is
a number on which calculations can be done using formulas. Any entry

                          that starts with +, -, or a period (.), is a value. E.g. 17.83,
                          +23324411111

Labels / Text: A label is any text entry that contains an alphabet or
non-numeric character (like #, &, etc.). values are descriptive pieces of
information such as names, months, etc. E.g. Musah, January, Friday,
                                        th
                          24.04', #6, 7 , 57 Lane, etc.
Formula: formulas are instructions for excel to perform calculations.

                          E.g. A7+B7, =C4*C5, =F11-G11, =Z6/M20, etc.
Function: A function is a predefined (inbuilt) formula that helps
perform common mathematical functions. E.g. =SUM(A5:G5),
                          AVERAGE(B2:B6),

               Entering Data

To enter data into a cell:

Click the cell where you want to type information.
Type the data. An insertion point appears in the cell as the data is typed.

The data can be typed in either the active cell (as in above) or in the
                          Formula bar (as in below).
