On Wednesday, Hong Kong announced a suspension of all flights from Indonesia, effective
beginning Friday. The administration has placed Indonesia in the A1 group of countries
considered as extremely high risk – along with Brazil, India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines and
South Africa – after the number of imported cases from Indonesia “reached the above threshold”.
China Daily earlier reported that four passengers on board Garuda Indonesia flight 876 from
Jakarta had tested positive for COVID-19 when they arrived in Hong Kong on Sunday. Previously,
the territory also found seven other imported cases from Indonesia.
Indonesia, which is set to take over the G20 presidency from Italy next year, remains among the
countries that are hardest hit by the pandemic in Asia.
Earlier this week, the Finance Ministry acknowledged that the current spate of COVID-19 surges
would affect economic growth in the second quarter of the year.
