A refusal to undertake an unannounced alcohol and drug test or pre-test will be deemed as a
positive result. The relevant client will be notified accordingly and disciplinary procedures will follow.
These tests will be carried out both by internal staff and external contractors.
For Cause Sampling
For cause sampling will be undertaken in any of the following circumstances:
• following an accident or incident
• where any employee’s behaviour gives ground to suspect that they may be unfit for work
through alcohol or drugs
• as part of an on-going treatment monitoring program
Employees subject to ‘for cause’ sampling:
• is not permitted to resume work until and unless a negative test result has been obtained
• is advised of the results of testing promptly
In case of a positive result, the employee will be suspended in line with company disciplinary
procedures.
Prescription or ‘Over the counter’ Medication
Employees shall notify their appropriate Senior Manager of any “over the counter” or prescribed
medication that is being taken or is intended to be taken that may affect their ability to undertake
their normal duties.
In such circumstances the Senior Manager shall implement suitable controls in order to prevent risks
from being imported onto client controlled infrastructure. He or she may seek specialist advice from
the approved drugs and alcohol screening provider or the HSA as to the potential side effects of any
“over the counter” or prescribed medication.
Disciplinary Procedure
Any employee found to be in breach of company and/or client’s policy on alcohol and drugs will be
subjected to disciplinary procedures. An employee will have breached the policy if they:
• fail an alcohol test
• test positive for drugs
• refuse to take a drug and alcohol test
• report or try to report for duty when unfit through drugs and/or alcohol
• consume drugs or alcohol whilst on duty
• possess illegal drugs whilst on duty
• decline or discontinue an approved course of treatment/rehabilitation for a drug or alcohol
problem without good cause or
• declare a problem with drugs or alcohol after they had been tested under this policy or have
been selected for unannounced testing
Re-employment following a positive result
No person who has been found to be in breach of the policy will be re-employed unless:
• at least five years have elapsed since the breach of Policy took place
• the applicants submit to and passes a pre-employment drugs and alcohol test
• an individual regime of unannounced testing for a period of not less than two years from the
date of employment is devised and agreed by the applicant
Exclusions
Persons who have two instances of breaching the alcohol and drug policy shall not be re-employed.
