HART'S-RIGGS' WOMEN'S INSTITUTE AT MADOC FAIR
“For Home and Country”
Founded in Stoney Creek, Ontario in 1887, Women's Institutes were begun with the purpose of improving home, health and
community life across Ontario. The motto of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario (FWIO), “For Home and Country”,
still holds true in their efforts today.
The movement spread with hundreds of branches across Canada. In 1915, WI branches were established across the UK, soon
followed with groups in Australia and New Zealand. The most famous of all WI members was the late Queen Elizabeth 11. Like
her mother before her, our late Queen was a member of the Sandringham WI branch. As Princess Elizabeth, she joined WI at
the age of 18 and was an active member until her passing.
A unique part of the Institute's recent display at Madoc Fair featured a 1916 Red Cross signature quilt bearing 320 signatures
from the Cooper- Remington community. Each person had paid 25 cents to have their name embroidered on the quilt. That
effort raised eighty dollars that went toward sending supplies to soldiers at the front. This work of art was recently donated
back to the community and will be displayed in various places in the Madoc area.
Continuing to maintain an active interest in community affairs, Hart's-Riggs' branch of the FWIO will be cooperating with
Madoc and District Chamber of Commerce to present an all-candidates meeting at the Madoc Township Hall at 7:00 pm on
October 13.
Hart's-Riggs' Women's Institute welcomes new members. Monthly meeting are currently held at Madoc Township Hall. For
