TECH TALK
Welcome to another month of tech talk. This month we are going to broach the subject of QR code scams. This is a
relatively new way for scammers to get money from you and it’s a bit more complex and we need to really pay attention or
we can end up getting caught. Yesterday I received an email from one of my customers stating they had become prey for
one of these scams. Hello Jim, this is L
I need some ideas or help regarding a current issue; regarding QR Codes, etc. I have fallen for
a scam worth $2500 that was on Facebook and then supposedly thru eBay. The ebay@Motors-
Financial-Inc.com email looked legit to me but, then I have never done any purchases before
thru there. The method of payment was 5 x $500 thru Pay in Person via the Post Office using a
QR Code sent from the eBay email.
Emails from "Elizabeth Thompson" and this supposed eBay started to sound off but, I had already sent off the monies. They
wanted the scans of the 5 receipts from the Post Office, which I have not sent them and never will; told them I did not
complete the transactions because it was nasty weather that day. Now I am seeing emails regarding another $1000 for some
phony insurance on the shipment of the item to my house. Is there a way from the emailed QR Code and the 5 QR Codes on
the Post Office receipts that will help me to recover at least some of my monies? The scammers are getting smarter as you
can see above. Funds were sent in a way that makes it very difficult to recover. To often we get caught up in the urgency of a
matter and really need to step back and really take a look at what is being asked. In this case all that can be done is report to
the local authorities and block any forms of communication with the perpetrators. As to recovering funds this is still being
worked on and hopefully there is a better outcome.
Until next month, be safe and if you are not sure ASK.
