But Klaus Friedrich too fooled himself.
Early in his marriage to the "naive" hairdresser he confidently signed over his Villa to her to protect his assets from the consequences of his wrong doings - that was his understanding and she agreed to that wholeheartedly, as every woman believes what she says, at least for a short moment. But in the back of her mind that was, what he had to give her, or she wouldn't have gone to him and he should have known that.
At the end of his life she got the Villa and he had to ask his Italian driver to get 100 Euros to go for a meal. Perhaps all men fool themselves in our naïve expectations of life and of the female gender. Only Alex seemed to be an exception to that rule - his protection: His pragmatic view of the world. Sometimes I wish, I would have a bit of that too.
