While working on duty in a civilian dress capacity on Oct. 5, 2015, Officers Sampim and Navarro observed an offender attempting to shoot at another gang member. At this time, Officers Navarro and Sampim announced their office, drawing the attention of the offender away from his intended victim. The of- fender turned toward the officers and pointed his gun. Both officers, in fear for their lives, shot at the offender, stopping the impending threat.
The offend- er was placed under arrest and a fully-load- ed 44-caliber magnum hand- gun was recov- ered.
Due to the bravery and commitment to save all lives that is instilled in all Chicago Police Officers, Officers Navarro and Sampim removed another potential murderer from the streets of our city.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police, Chicago Lodge 7 presents Offi- cers Alvaro Navarro and Saharat Sampim with Distinguished Service Awards. d

It is with great ap- preciation that the Fraternal Order of Police, Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officers Jacek Leja, Justin Ra- ether, Gloria Tirado and Matthew Gozdal with Distinguished Service Awards. d
On Oct. 15, 2015, Officers Tirado and Gozdal responded to a call of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, the officers were met by a woman who was hysterical because she believed her friend was shot and possibly killed. At this time, the call became upgraded to shots fired, and Officers Leja and Raether answered to assist the call.
As they entered the apartment, Officer Leja was facing the wrong end of a handgun. The offender ran into another room of the apartment and both Offi- cers Leja and Raether tried to talk him down and have him join them in the main room again.
The offender mentioned something indicating that he was seeking suicide by police. At that time, the offender ran back into the main room and rushed Officer Raether, who was armed with a rifle. Both Officers, fearing for their lives, led the offender into the hallway of the building and engaged in gunfire, permanently ending the threat.
