Officer Benjamin Perez honored in ceremony
Beneath an honorary street sign that bears his name, Officer Benjamin Perez was remembered during a memorial roll call at 53rd and Nashville on Sept. 18 — the 18th anniversary of his death in the line of duty.
Perez, a member of the 10th District, had only been on the job four years when a commuter train struck him while involved in a stakeout on the West Side in 2002. Perez and his partner were working along railroad tracks between 21st Street and Cermak at the time of the accident that took his life.
During the memorial roll call, which also paid tribute to fall- en CPD Officer Bernie Domagala, Chicago Lodge 7 President John Catanzara sent his best wishes to the Perez and Domagala families, while reminding them they will always be a part of the FOP family no matter how many years pass.
