On Jan. 18, 2021, Officers Pedro An- aya and Curtis Alequin curbed a vehicle for a minor traffic violation at 3843 W. Lexington St. The front-seat passenger immediately exited and fled on foot. Officers Anaya and Alequin gave chase. During the foot pursuit, the offender produced a handgun, dropped to one knee in a shooting-type stance and fired several shots at Officers Anaya and Ale- quin.
Both officers, fearing for their lives, returned fire, striking the offender nu- merous times in his lower body. The of- fender continued to flee and was finally placed into custody at 3830 W. Polk St., on a rear porch.
Three loaded semiautomatic hand- guns — a Glock 27 .40-caliber with ex- tended magazine, a Ruger LC9 9-mm with a defaced serial number and a Springfield XD9 9-mm with attached la-
ser sight — were located in the immedi- ate vicinity of the offender. The offender is a convicted felon and was on parole. The detectives were called, and the of- fender was charged with attempted murder and armed habitual criminal. Thanks for a job well done.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officers Anaya and Alequin with the Award of Valor.

On Nov. 15, 2020, at the lo- cation of 39 W. Jackson Blvd., Sergeant Jason Slater and Offi- cers Jack Diana, Robert Kudzia and Richard Caro were waived down by citizens who observed a traffic crash with severe inju- ries. Both vehicles were locked together amid the crumpled steel, and one of the vehicles began to smolder with the driv- er still pinned inside.
The officers secured the pe- rimeter, notified CFD EMS and immediately began to attend to the victims. Sergeant Slat- er climbed through the smol- dering vehicle’s rear door and secured the pinned victim’s cervical spine, immobilizing her neck to prevent injury. The
officers alerted the sergeant that the fire was beginning to envelop the vehicle and EMS had still not arrived.
The officers, fearing for the sergeant and driver’s safety, were able to phys- ically pry open the front door of the mangled wreckage and remove the victim without exacerbating her in- juries. EMS arrived on the scene and transported the victim to Northwestern Hospital, and CFD extinguished the fire. The other driver was issued numerous traffic citations for causing the accident and having no driver’s license and no insurance.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Sergeant Slater and Officers Diana, Kudzia and Caro with the Life Saving Award.
