LET’S PAINT
SURFACE PREPARATION
Sand the box panel before applying the basecoat. Masonite is a slick surface. It needs to be sanded so the acrylic paint will adhere. Use no. 220 grit sandpaper to gently sand the surface and remove the dust with a "tack rag". Prepare the box panel with two (2) coats of Black Green. Use a fine textured sponge roller brush. Roll and cross roll until the paint is nearly dry, similar to “eggshell” finish. Make sure the surface is dry (back to room temperature), lightly sand, and repeat for a second coat. Don’t forget the sides of the box. It’s best to let it dry overnight.
BASIC MIXES
Black (B): UMB + BU (60/40) Orange (O): CYP + BR (50/50)
BACKGROUND
Refer to the color mixing guide for a sample. Start mixing the value scale with the ** value.
MIXES
Light Value (L): MED + W
Medium Value (M): DK + W
**Dark Value (DK): UMB + CYP + B
Transfer the background pattern to the surface. Start the background with the light value working into the medium then on to the dark. Make sure there is a gradual progression from one value to another and only blend between the consecutive values. Don’t jump from light to dark, dark to light, as this will put that value where you don’t want it. Paint the shadows, making sure to keep your edges crisp. In the area around the small persimmon and the large leaf, leave an area for the medium and lighter values. You may find it best just to use the medium value in this area so you can come back and strengthen shadow.

This pumpkin is painted according to the Color Value Placement Map (pg 37). Paint the pumpkin one section at a time. DO NOT block in the values. Work from one value to the next in each section. It’s easy to lose track on the map, and each section can be adjusted as needed.
