  FRONT SIDE BACK SIDE
LET’S PAINT
NOTE:
The same colors and techniques are used on this design's front and the back. I suggest painting the detail on one side of the piece at a time. After one side is finished, brush the surface with two coats of Clear Glaze Medium and proceed to complete the opposite side. This will protect your finished painting and allow for cleanup from any mishaps!
A protective layer of Clear Glaze Medium can be applied at any time during the painting process. If you decide to apply a protective layer of Clear Glaze Medium, keep in mind your graphite lines cannot be removed, so either remove your graphite lines first or make sure you will be able to cover them with the painted design.
STEP 1
Hat and Pumpkin
Apply color in the form of a glaze on the hat and pumpkin. To accomplish this, work one area at a time. Use a 3/4" oval wash brush to apply a “thin” layer of JoSonja Retarder Medium over the entire surface. Temper or remove the excess Retarder Medium from the surface with a dry 3/4" white mop brush. Using a no. 12 filbert brush loaded with Retarder Medium, pick up a small amount of Vermilion and blend on a wax palette until you have a thin glaze. Brush this glaze on the surface of the hat and pumpkin in shape-following strokes working from the outside edges toward the highlighted area; the background color will be used as the lightest highlight. Use a 3/4" Possibilities brush to blend and soften. Be careful not to touch an area that you have already finished! You don’t want fingerprints!
To clean up any areas of the design that might have overlapped with your glaze; moisten a clean brush and blot on a paper towel, then wipe any paint off as needed with your clean brush. While the surface is still moist with Retarder Medium, glaze the hat band, the sclera in the pumpkin’s eyes and the inside of the pumpkin's nose and mouth with Yellow Light in the same manner. Dry completely.
For linework on the hat and pumpkin, use a no. 2 short liner brush and Dark Orange Mix. Dry completely. 66 TheDecorativePainter • FALL/WINTER 2022
