Step 3: Load the toe of a damp 3/8" or 1/2" angle with Sunny Day and Warm White; blend on the palette. Float color on the highlighted side of the petals. Soften with the mop brush. Let dry. Load a slightly damp no. 8 with Bright Yellow and paint a wash on the petals to brighten them.
Step 4: Load the medium Mezzaluna with Laguna and wipe almost all the paint off on a paper towel. Dry-brush color
over the yellow highlight on the flower center. Load the small Mezzaluna with Bright Yellow and Warm White. Mix on the palette and wipe almost all the paint off on a paper towel; dry- brush color on the petals. Paint another wash of Bright Yellow over the petals.

Step 5: Load the small Mezzaluna with Sunny Day and Snow (Titanium) White. Mix on palette and wipe almost all the paint off on a paper towel. Dry-brush highlights on petals again. Load the toe of a damp 3/8" or 1/2" angle with Asphaltum and Saffron Yellow; blend on the palette and float color between petals. Soften with mop brush.
Rinse the brush, load the toe with Asphaltum and Burnt Sienna and float color at the base of the petals in a loose “u” stroke. Soften with a mop brush if needed. Notice how I left the edges of the petal, giving the petals some dimension. Deepen any of the shading with a touch of Asphaltum and a touch of Paynes Grey.

Step 6: Load a wet no. 4 or no. 8 with Jack-O’Lantern Orange and paint a wash on some of the petals. Repeat with Saffron Yellow or Bright Yellow if you want to brighten any of the petals.
STEP 6
Step 7: Load the liner brush with Sunny Day, Bright Yellow and Snow (Titanium) White and loosely outline one side of the petals. Reevaluate your highlights and shadows.
