August 28, 1976. Thereisevidence of some former sidings to the right of the train,
which were associated with the Torquay&Paignton Gas Works. Paignton Pier can also

2002 as No. 47831 descends towardsPaignton with the 09.15 from Manchester,which
is formed of aWest Coast rake with the DVTbehindthe loco.

rake of InterCity-liveried Mk.2s on July13, 1996 as it gets into its stride with the
10.33 Paignton-Manchester.

13: PAIGNTON: Although British Railways’Eastern and North Eastern Regionshad
mergedin1967, inter-regional workings to theformer NE stations still used ‘N’ in the
headcodes untilheearly 1970s –which is why‘Warship’ No. D801 carries headcode
1N37 forthe northbound Paignton-Bradford‘Devonian’ on May20, 1968. RJColes
14: PAIGNTON: Asimilar viewtothe 1968 shot on July3,1999has No.47822
leaving Paignton with the 10.01 to Newcastle. Note the levelcrossing’s manual gates
have been replaced by automatic barriers.
15: PAIGNTON: At thesouth of thestation, No. 47828 rolls into Paignton from
Goodrington sidings with the empty stock forthe 10.04 to Newcastle. The line on
thefar left is the former down line to Kingswear nowused by the Dartmouth Steam
Railway, which runs parallel to Network Rail’s single track between Paignton and
13 Goodrington (the former up Kingswear line), although thereisstill aconnection
between the tworailways.
