Having children today is not dependent on quantity, but quality. Providing good education and
skills to children is considered more important.
2. Uhum and Ugari
Uhum means law, while Ugari means custom. For the Batak people, the law must be
enforced fairly. Justice can be realized if people make a habit of remaining faithful to their
promises. If you renege on an agreement, according to Batak customs in the past, the person will
receive customary sanctions. People who violate the agreement will be considered despicable.
Therefore, Uhum and Ugari are very important in the life of the Batak people.
3. Hamoraon
Hamoraon is a cultural value that means honor. The honor in question is a balance between
material and spiritual. One must have both of these things, for example wealth and a kind attitude
towards others, then one is considered to have perfect honor. If only one, then it is incomplete and
has not reached Hamoraan.
4. Shelter
Protection has the meaning as a protector or protector. The life philosophy of protection
teaches that every individual can be a protector for those around him. Therefore, the Batak people
are taught not to depend on others. This value teaches that the Batak people should live
independently and not always rely on others.
5. Marsisarian
Marsisarian is the value to maintain the balance of human relations. Every human being is
a different individual, so in social life, the values of Marsisarian are very necessary so that human
beings can live side by side in harmony, even though there are many differences between them.
Marsisarian values teach the Batak people to help, understand, and respect each other. That way
they will respect each other, so that conflict can be avoided.
6. Kinship
The last value is one of the characteristics of the Batak tribe which is very important in
their lives. Currently, we can see good kinship between the sub-tribes of the Batak community.
Good kinship can be realized through 3 things, namely family ties through marriage, good speech
between people, and Martarombo.
Martarombo means looking for relatives. This is especially true for the Batak tribe who are
wandering. Usually they will look for fellow Batak tribes or those who have the same residents in
their overseas places. The aim is to establish good relations between clans even though they are
overseas.
