The Batak philosophy that is commonly known is "Dalihan na tolu" which in Indonesian
can be interpreted as "Dalihan = Furnace", "Na Tolu = Tiga" or "Three Furnaces". Which means
3 functional positions that support each other so that they become an inseparable whole. The three
positions are; the first: somba marhula - hula/respect to the wife's family, the second: manat
mardongan tubu/be careful with relatives, whether biological or family, the third: elek marboru/be
persuasive towards the daughter or the family of our daughter's husband Although what is better
known is the philosophy of dalihan na tolu, in fact, the old Bataknese parents taught many
philosophies about how to live socially.
1. Dijolo raja si eahan, dipudi raja si paimaon means if you are in front of us as a guide, behind as
a protector
2. Siboru satisfied, siboru bakkara, molo dung satisfied sae soada mara means being honest is
much better than hiding
3. Sungkunon poda natua - old, sungkunon gogo tu naumposo means learn to the wiser, and work
like a young person
4. This is rare tujolo, Sinarihon tupudi means to move forward, but keep an eye on the future
5. Tinanda pidong sian imbuluna, tinanda jolma sian pangalaho na means birds are named after
their feathers, humans are known for their actions
6. Aek godang is aek sea. Dos ni roha sibahen nasaut means deliberation for consensus
7. Molo hancit roham dibahen donganmu, unang mabalos mambahen hancit rohana. Asa unang
dua sipatureon means if someone makes you hurt, don't return it so that there isn't much to
reconcile.
8. Unang leas dipoda, oloi sipasingot means don't be trivial with advice and obey warnings
9. Tinaba hau toras bahen sopo di balian means respect for parents will be abundant in blessings
