almost on all holidays probably to escape from his mom’s tantrums. He sat next to me and started enjoying
the program. I was reminded of my childhood days when watching squirrels was my prime hobby. There
were many huge trees around our house – one of which was a large shaggy neem tree. Its branches used
to stretch right up to our window and its leaves used to swish against the windowpane. The lovely tree
held out its branches to beautiful little sparrows and squirrels. I along with my sisters used to sprinkle
seeds and nuts for them on the windowsill. The cute little squirrels used to slide along the branch towards
the window, huddling in a ball and then stretching their legs as if standing on tiptoe. What a lovely sight
it was! We used to love watching the squirrels pick up the nuts and crunch it away to glory. We woke up
every day to the sounds of chirps and squeaks of these wonderful beings. We used to run back from school
to feed these beautiful creatures and watch them play. I still remember the day when I sat one full day on
the staircase steps and watched how the elder squirrel taught the younger one to jump from the tree
branch on to the staircase wall and I jumped with joy when finally, the little one made it. I was jolted out
of my memory with the sound of laughter. The boy was shouting with delight looking at the acrobats of
the squirrels in the TV. Involuntarily, I peeped out of my window, only to be presented with a cold sight
of plain walls and fully drawn curtains. I have planted a few saplings in my compound and am sure its
branches will again swish past the windows and bring back these special visitors and delight the residents
in years to come.
