การขออนุญาต เชน

บางกรณีใชเพื่อเปนการเสนอแนะ เชน

Shall we go to the movie tonight?

4. Should เพื่อแสดงหนาที่ที่ควรทํา ขอผูกมัด หรือใหคําแนะนํา

You should attend the class regularly.
กริยาชวยอื่นที่มีความหมายเหมือน should ไดแก had better เชน

It’s late! You had better hurry up.

5. Can, could ใชในกรณีที่ตองการขออนุญาตในการกระทําสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง เชน

Can/Could you open the window, please?

6. May ใชในการแสดงความสุภาพมากกวา can และ could เพื่อใชในการแสดงความ

เปนไปไดของเหตุการณ เชน

May I help you? (แสดงความสุภาพ)

I may pass the exams if I study hard. (แสดงความเปนไปได)

7. Might ใชแสดงความเปนไปไดในความหมายที่นอยกวา may เชน

I may rain today. (ฝนอาจตก)

I might rain today. (มีโอกาสที่ฝนอาจตกไดแตนอยกวาประโยคแรก)

8. Must ใชเพื่อแสดงความจําเปนในสิ่งที่ตองทํา

You must not smoke in the restaurant.

9. Ought to มีความหมายเหมือน should แตใหความรูสึกที่สุภาพกวา เชน

We ought not to talk loudly in the library.
