             Life Cycle
The female will lay eggs directly into the grain kernel, where they hatch in a
few days. Over 200 eggs may be laid at a time. The larvae hatch and feed on
the interior of the grain, going through four instars until the grain is completely
hollowed out, which takes 3-5 weeks. The pupae remain in the kernel for 1-2 6 5
weeks longer. The complete life cycle can be completed in 1-5 months, with
about four generations each year. The adult will live 7-8 months. Photo Courtesy of UNIVAR
            GRANARY WEEVIL Actual size 1/16”
The Granary Weevil is a very small beetle, about 1/16th of an inch for the body length. The head is elongated into
a snout. Granary Weevil larvae are small pale grubs without any legs. It is a brownish black color. Granary Wee-
vils infest food products, especially dry organic materials found in the pantry. They commonly get into breakfast
cereals. While they do not consume large amounts of the food material, their presence is enough to eliminate us-
age of the contaminated product. They are a serious pest in quantity storage areas, often destroying whole grain
            elevators worth of product.

             Life Cycle
The female lays up to 25 eggs per day directly into the kernels of in-
fected grain products. In her 4-5 month life span, she will lay 300-400
eggs. About half the eggs will not hatch. The larvae and pupae remain 3
in the kernel for a month, becoming adults which will leave in 3-4 days. 4
In warm weather, the life cycle can be a little as 32 days. Photo Courtesy of UNIVAR

            RICE WEEVIL Actual size 1/8”
Despite the name, the Rice weevil will infest stored grain products, cereals, wheat products, fruits, beans, and
nuts in addition to rice. It is primarily a pest in warmer environments. The adults will readily fly to new areas to
infest. The reddish brown adults are about 1/8th inch long.
